Surfside Ceramics is a family owned and operated business based in Squantum MA. The pottery is made by Richard, Teri, Adam and Miele MacMillan. Combined, we have over 125 years of experience working with clay. We have been participating in the Beacon Hill Art Walk for nearly 20 years and love being a part of a group such talented local artists.
Materials and Techniques: We focus on crystalline glazed porcelain pottery. Crystalline glazing is a tremendously exciting and wildly unpredictable process! Just like the gems that are found in nature, the slightest change in temperature, chemistry, and other factors can change the appearance of the crystals.
This type of glaze is extremely difficult to produce, and very few potters work with this technique. It requires carefully constructed glaze recipes, firing schedules, application techniques, and a whole lot of luck.
All of our pieces are hand thrown or slab formed and each is truly one of a kind.
